This workshop is designed for those with a basic knowledge of Ableton Live and a basic knowledge of music theory. No previous AI or programming experience is required as we will explain the basics of AI in Music Composition step by step.

Requirements: a laptop (Mac / Win) running a copy of Live Suite (11 or 12 / trial suitable), headphones and a gmail account.

Whether you’re an experienced musician or composer, this workshop will give you the opportunity to expand your creative potential and discover new compostion horizons. Phelan & Martina will guide you through the landscape of AI tools that can be used for composition.  In this workshop you will utilise AI tools to assist in the composition process.  You’ll use generative AI and utilise Colab notebooks to run inference on AI models to generate musical ideas. You will use the AI tools to generate musical ideas and parts that you will then enhance, embellish and extend via composing and arranging techniques. You will build co-composer / co-producer AI tools for free that you will use to spark ideas which you will then use in real music compositions. 

Phelan Kane is a Berlin and London based music producer, engineer, artist, developer and educator. For over thirty years, he has been active in both the music industry and the contemporary music education sector, with a focus on electronic music and alternative bands. His specialty is sound design and production techniques such as synthesis and sampling, alongside mixing, mastering, audio processing and plug-in development and his credits include sources as diverse as Placebo, Radiohead, Fad Gadget, Depeche Mode, Moby, Snow Patrol, Mute, Sony BMG, Universal, EMI and Warner Bros. Phelan became one of the world’s first Ableton and Max Certified Trainers.

Martina Bertoni is a Berlin-based experimental cellist and composer whose work “dissolves the boundaries between emotion and architecture, crafting soundscapes where control and resonance become fluid entities” (A Closer Listen).  Her practice lies at the intersection between modern composition and experimental exploration: by blending electro-acoustic composition, generative systems, and drone minimalism, her works interrogate sound’s capacity to reshape spatial and temporal perception. Central to her research is the use of timelessness as a compositional framework.

Dieser Workshop richtet sich an Personen mit Grundkenntnissen in Ableton Live und Grundkenntnissen in Musiktheorie. Es sind keine Vorkenntnisse in KI oder Programmierung erforderlich, da wir die Grundlagen der KI in der Musikkomposition Schritt für Schritt erklären werden.

Egal, ob du ein erfahrener Musiker oder Komponist bist, dieser Workshop gibt dir die Möglichkeit, dein kreatives Potenzial zu erweitern und neue Horizonte in der Komposition zu entdecken. Phelan & Martina führen dich durch die Landschaft der KI-Tools, die für die Komposition verwendet werden können. In diesem Workshop wirst du KI-Tools einsetzen, um den Kompositionsprozess zu unterstützen. Du wirst generative KI und Colab-Notebooks verwenden, um Inferenz auf KI-Modellen durchzuführen und musikalische Ideen zu generieren. Seit über dreißig Jahren ist er sowohl in der Musikindustrie als auch im Bereich der zeitgenössischen Musikausbildung tätig, wobei sein Schwerpunkt auf elektronischer Musik und alternativen Bands liegt. Seine Spezialgebiete sind Sounddesign und Produktionstechniken wie Synthese und Sampling sowie Mixing, Mastering, Audiobearbeitung und Plug-in-Entwicklung. Martina Bertoni ist eine in Berlin lebende experimentelle Cellistin und Komponistin, deren Arbeit „die Grenzen zwischen Emotion und Architektur auflöst und Klanglandschaften schafft, in denen Kontrolle und Resonanz zu fließenden Einheiten werden“ (A Closer Listen). Ihre Praxis liegt an der Schnittstelle zwischen moderner Komposition und experimenteller Erforschung: Durch die Verschmelzung von elektroakustischer Komposition, generativen Systemen und Drone-Minimalismus hinterfragen ihre Werke die Fähigkeit von Klang, die räumliche und zeitliche Wahrnehmung neu zu gestalten. Im Mittelpunkt ihrer Forschung steht die Verwendung von Zeitlosigkeit als kompositorischer Rahmen.
