Exploring Sound with the Bullfrog Synthesizer

Discover the world of synthesis in this hands-on workshop with the Bullfrog synthesizer, an innovative instrument by Erica Synths and Richie Hawtin. Designed for beginners in sound design, the workshop explores subtractive synthesis, a fundamental method of crafting electronic sounds. You’ll start with the basics of sound synthesis and experiment with the Bullfrog, and take off from there. The final goal of the workshop is that you can make the basic patches and train your hearing for the cornerstone of electronic music which guides them to composing.

No prior knowledge is needed, as the workshop will kick off with an introduction to the Bullfrog synthesizer, its creation and design philosophy, followed by a practical session on subtractive synthesis. You’ll learn how to generate and shape electronic sounds by removing certain frequencies, using oscillators, filters, and envelopes to create unique tones. This workshop is for anyone excited to learn about synthesis and explore it in a no-pressure environment, where you can experience the Bullfrog’s versatility as both a learning and performance tool.

What is the Bullfrog

The Bullfrog is created by Erica Synths & Richie Hawtin, Bullfrog is an educational electronic music instrument designed to captivate and inspire both youth and professionals alike. Bullfrog invites you to unlock musicality while combining the thrill of electronic music production with a comprehensive learning experience. 

Bullfrog is a classical subtractive synthesizer – it consists of several “modules” for sound generation – VCO, NOISE GENERATOR – and treatment – VCF, VCA/DELAY, as well as “modules” that generate control and modulation signals to control them – ENVELOPE GENERATORS and SAMPLE & HOLD. The Bullfrog will not make the sound on its own unless it is patched – using Eurorack patch cables to interconnect the “modules” or by inserting voice cards that create internal connections between the “modules” in a specific way and add extra functionality, like sampler/looper, sequencer, groovebox, etc. This approach better helps to understand the functionality of a subtractive synthesizer and the principles of sound design with instruments like these. In May 2025, Erica Synthe also release a drum computer with the Bullfrog to make the education music course. 

In order to provide a well-rounded understanding of the functionality of this synthesizer and sound synthesis in general, this education synthesizer is introduced in a workshop to stimulate learning by hearing and activate the creative music process.

Dieser Ansatz hilft besser, die Funktionsweise eines subtraktiven Synthesizers und die Prinzipien des Sounddesigns mit solchen Instrumenten zu verstehen.
