Concert:

miaw is a new collaborative pop project that indulges breakbeats, glitchy vocals and warm synths in a recognizable yet soft experimental song structure. The cross genre duo is composed of Frederik Bruun (Infant Finches) and Liza Dries from Denmark and The Netherlands.

Together they perform a ‘UK Bass’ inspired deconstructed club music resembling ‘Sega Bodega’ and ‘Pink Pantheress’ while blending into wavy ‘Animal Collective’ parts.

Their fast, intuitive approach to song writing leads to songs that with a contemporary, fresh and authentic character allows for an immediate intuitiveness, maintaining a raw honesty in both sound and feel.

Synthesize Me!

Synth-Session: We bring the Clock, you bring your Instrument of choice

Synthesize Me! is the jam session with electronic music instruments that will make your sine wave hearts beat faster.

Since October 2022, people who want to make music outside their studios and secret basement rehearsal rooms meet once a month at different locations. No matter if you are a beginner or a synthesizer veteran, all people are welcome to join this format with their devices. It is also thought of those who have nothing to do with electronic music production. The aim of the jam session is to learn together what a synthesizer is, how the instruments work together and which parameters change the music. In the process, cross-genre soundscapes are created, in which new things are discovered through disturbances. True to the motto: Trial & Error!

Really every person who makes music and already released something knows it: The mastering files are here! With great anticipation and excitement, the masters are checked and evaluated on various sound systems. Frustration and enthusiasm about the result are often very close to each other. Errors in the mixdown suddenly become very clear, or the result triggers euphoric incomprehension: „what the hell was done there, it suddenly sounds so good….“. Piet Charlet, as mastering-engineer and operator of Time Tools Mastering, falls back on a wealth of experience that he has gained in 20 years of professional experience and collaboration with artists* like Skin (Skunk Anansie), Marquess, Sido, Cassandra Steen or Madeline Juno. Bunch of Kunst – A Film about Sleaford Mods

Documentary, Germany 2017, 102 min, OV English, German

Directed, written & produced by Christine Franz

British punk duo Sleaford Mods have been called „the voice of Britain“ by their fans, „Britain’s angriest band“ by the Guardian and „The world’s greatest rock ’n‘ roll band“ by Iggy Pop. Bunch of Kunst, Christine Franz’s official documentary feature, follows them on their two-year journey from Nottingham bedroom recording sessions to chart success.

“Young people are signing major record deals and they just sing about love. I’m a great believer of love. But for fuck’s sake, there’s a lot going on! Who wants to hear that if you are on £15 a week? And you turn the telly on and some fucker is spouting on about love“, says singer Jason Williamson. Thanks to their sweary rants about modern England, Nottingham duo Sleaford Mods have been called „the voice of Britain“ by their fans, „Britain’s angriest band“ by the Guardian and „The world’s greatest rock ’n‘ roll band“ by Iggy Pop. Jason Williamson, a former chicken factory worker and father of two, his band mate, beatmaker Andrew Fearn, and their manager Steve Underwood, avant-garde bedroom label owner and former bus driver, have won over fans with their brutally honest lyrics and DIY ethos. Following them on their two-year journey from Sherwood to chart success, Christine Franz’s official documentary feature tells the story of three guys taking on the music business on their own terms.

Conny Plank – The potential of Noise

a film by Reto Caduff and Stephan Plank

Germany 2017, 92 minutes, German-English original version with German subtitles.

With Annette Humpe, David Stewart, Michael Rother, Gianna Nannini, DAF, Scorpions, Whodini, Ultravox and others.

Konrad „Conny“ Plank (1940-1987) was one of the most innovative sound designers and music producers of his time. The recordings that were made in his legendary recording studio in Wolperath near Cologne from the 1960s onwards revolutionized the music world. He pioneered Krautrock and paved the way for electronically influenced pop music. Bands and artists like NEU!, Brian Eno, David Bowie, Ultravox and the Eurythmics recorded with him and still emphasize the influence he had on their music. Without Plank, Gianna Nannini would probably have sung in English forever, and had he been more sympathetic to a certain Bono, U2’s „Joshua Tree“ would sound very different today. – When Conny died at the age of only 47, his son Stephan was just 13 years old. 25 years later, together with co-director Reto Caduff, he set out to find the man he often only experienced behind the mixing desk as a child. At the same time, it also became a search for his father’s artistic legacy. He met up with Conny’s old friends and companions: with Annette Humpe and the Scorpions, with Gianna Nannini, Devo, Ultravox and many more. Private, mostly unreleased archive footage, alternates with personal interviews in which the musicians* provide insights into Conny’s meticulous and highly empathetic working methods. The emotional portrait of the legendary Conny Plank thus also becomes a fascinating journey through the national and international pop music history of the 70s and 80s.

Director Stephan Plank about his film:

My father was the music producer and artist Conny Plank. Kraftwerk, the Eurythmics, Gianna Nannini, David Bowie, Brian Eno, NEU!, Ultravox, Killing Joke, Les Rita Mitsouko, Can, Nina Hagen, DAF, Ideal, the Einstürzende Neubauten and countless other musicians recorded their songs in our home studio.

We lived on a farm near Cologne. Our house was always full of musicians. We were like a family, living together in the same house, eating at the same table, brushing our teeth at the same sink.

When my father died, I was 13 years old. He was an elemental force who had infinite strength and creativity. He was a pioneer who anticipated technical developments and shaped new musical styles. But he was also Hamburg’s only chain-smoking marathon runner. He is said to have hardly slept for over two years, rode his bicycle across the Alps to Italy and could tell jokes that had people roaring with laughter on the floor.

My father worked around the clock. And I practically grew up in the studio. He was permanently present, but not really available. In fact, we only had a few moments together.

As a little boy, I didn’t understand my father’s work. All my life I’ve been defined by him. Everywhere I go, I am introduced with the words, „This is Stephan, Conny’s son.“

Twenty-five years after my father’s death, I was ready to confront his myth. I wanted to find out what he left behind, how strong he really was, which stories were true and which were not. During my work on Conny Plank – The Potential of Noise I found answers to these questions.

Ableton for Noobs (Flinta* only!)

Workshop: Ableton 4 Noobs (Flinta* only) w/ Liza Dries

This workshop is for flinta* only . The acronym FLINTA* stands for women, lesbians, intersexual, non-binary, trans and agender people – all those who are patriarchally discriminated against because of their gender identity.

This workshop is aimed at people who have had little or no contact with the music production software Ableton Live. Liza will guide you through the structure and possibilities of the program and give you the opportunity to make your first steps in Ableton.

Liza Dries is a Dutch, Cologne-based artist and producer exploring the crossovers of experimental sounds and ethereal pop music. Her songs depict a world much softer than reality, where intimate themes are alienated by digital, glitchy sounds and voice distortions.

With an intuitive feeling for soundtrack-like lyrics and sound, her songs are never quite literal, but rather set an atmosphere // ambience. She released her self-produced EP ‘RL’ (18.11.22) with Safe Space Records, a synthetic diary with influences from genres such as electronica, alternative R&B and Hyperpop. ‚RL‘ has been caught up on and praised by various media channels for its genre-flexibility and idiosyncrasy of style.

Live-Set & Performance

Berghain Resident JakoJako has teamed up with the Filipino-Canadian dance artist Alvin Collantes for a special live performance. Linking modular sythesizers and sensors attached to Alvin’s body and enabeling his movements to manipulate and upgrade the created modular soundscapes.

Primarily a live performer, JakoJako makes extensive use of modular synthesis in her productions and on stage. ”Depending on how you configure your system, you can design a completely different instrument every time. I love when it’s surprising me.” When not in the studio, her expertise is put to use advising well-established artists on their own systems at Berlin’s synth-mecca SchneidersLaden.

Alvin is a Filipino-Canadian dance artist, drag performer and Certified Gaga teacher based in Berlin, Germany. Drawing from his personal experiences as passionate raver, queer, immigrant and a person of colour, the essence of his research explores topics of assimilation and its emotional upheavals, physical sensations and untold stories of marginalized bodies and tackling the impact of drag & resilience in queer communities towards the cultivation of self-acceptance. He has been recently been featured in Adam Munning’s short film “OASIS” for Dazed & Calvin Klein about the celebration of queer family, and the ease and elation that emerges once you find your people and your place in the world.

Workshop: Content Creation & Social Media for Artists with Silvia Bianchi

Give the algorithm something to eat! In order to keep reaching your hard-won followers and not sink into the depths of media irrelevance, different requirements must be met depending on the platform. This can be quite annoying and frustrating, and raises several questions. What are the requirements of the different platforms, and how can I feed the algorithm efficiently to get the most reach? Media mix, time of day, and content are just a few parameters that dictate how the algorithm plays out content to followers.

But how do I create relevant content without torpedoing my artistic identity, and how do I manage to generate this content alongside my paid work and creative activity?

In the workshop, Silvia Bianchi will give an overview of the key features and the accompanying requirements of the different platforms. In addition, we will work out together which tricks can be used to outsmart the algorithm, while the participants will be supported in developing their own voice and strategy for the preferred medium.

Graduated in Semiotics, Silvia Bianchi has more than ten years of experience in the fields of communication, creative direction and education. After working as Editor in Chief for the media company Freeda, where she reached almost 1 million followers in one year, and working at Sangre, a leading agency in the Spanish music and cultural industry, she is now working as a freelance consultant for artists and institutions. With a deep understanding of cultural and creative industries, she explores the intersection between culture and social media, developing organic content creation strategies. She has taught and given lectures at Instituto Europeo del Design, MTV European Music Awards, Fundación Telefónica, New York Art Book Fair at MoMA PS1, Los Angeles Art Book fair at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. She has worked with artists such as La Zowi, Gata Cattana and BRAVA, and festivals such as Electrónica en Abril and SÓNAR. She was co-founder of Bam Bam, a project by La Casa Encendida (Madrid), that aimed to shine a spotlight on the presence of women and members of the LGBTQI+ community in music.

Workshop / with Bureau B (Hamburg)

Isa Schwarzenberg & Daniel Jahn from Hamburg will give us deep insights into the label work of Bureau B. We discuss distribution channels, re-issues, artist management and why, despite the eternal struggle with physical releases, Bureau B is still a vinyl label. For those who are not familiar with this label:

Bureau B is a renowned music label based in Hamburg, Germany. Since its inception in 2005, the label has become a major platform for experimental and innovative music. Bureau B is known for its unique catalog that spans a wide range of genres including electronica, kraut(rock), avant-garde and various genres of electronic music. Besides contemporary releases by artists and bands like JIMI TENOR, DIE WILDE JAGD, CONNY FRISCHAUF, NEUZEITLICHE BODENBELÄGE, CV VISION, STATION 17, TIN MAN, TOLOUSE LOW TRAX or SAEKO KILLY, you will also find exciting re-issues by DIETER MOEBIUS, CONRAD SCHNITZLER, PYROLATOR, DER PLAN, FAUST or PALAIS SCHAUMBURG, just to name a few.

With the help of some exemplary releases, we would like to outline the path from finding a theme to the final release: How does one succeed in establishing a clearly outlined musical and aesthetic profile? How do you ensure continuity? Who are the potential listeners and how do you establish a long-term relationship with your audience? How do you find topics for new releases and re-releases? What is the calculation for a publication? How long does it take from the first idea to the final release?

Workshop with Ingrid Yeboah (Berlin)

Led by copyright and media law attorney Ingrid Yeboah, we will address the topic of sample clearing and copyright in the music industry. This workshop is aimed at musicians and anyone interested in sampling and music. No matter if you have already made your first steps in music production or if you can already look back on some releases, this workshop should provide you with valuable insights and practical tips.

In this workshop we will first look at the legal aspects of copyright. Ingrid Yeboah will give us a deep insight into the current legal situation and show us how to identify legal loopholes and loopholes in order not to limit yourself in the creative process. We will also consider the perspective of the creators and learn how to treat their intellectual property respectfully.

A special focus of the workshop will be on sample clearing, a method that allows you to use legally protected music samples in your own productions. Ingrid Yeboah will explain to us the different aspects of sample clearing, from identifying the creators to obtaining the necessary permissions.

During the workshop we will also have space for discussion and questions. You can share your own experiences, learn from other participants, and discover new approaches together. In addition, Ingrid Yeboah will present practical examples from the music industry and provide you with valuable resources that will help you even after the workshop.

Ingrid Yeboah:

After studying law in Hannover, Düsseldorf and New York, Ingrid first moved into the entertainment industry, where she worked as an artist manager for a renowned artist agency. There she promoted the careers of musicians, actors and presenters through the best possible placement in the media and was responsible for negotiating the corresponding contracts. After almost six years as an artist manager, she completed a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in IP/Media Law at the University of Berlin (HU Berlin) and decided to return to her roots and founded her own law firm, in which she has since dedicated herself to all topics of the entertainment industry.

Documentary by Angela Christlieb

Austria 2019, 54 min, German version with English UT

Music: La Coquette, Petra and the Wolf, Schapka, Tankris, Voodoo Jürgens, XTMLX, Blueblut, Chicken, First Fatal Kiss, Luise Pop, MusikarbeiterInnenkapelle, Noisy Town Groove.

Chris Janka and his brother Ali are passionate tinkerers, artists, music lovers, sound freaks and electronerds. They have turned the empty basement of a factory building they moved into in the 1980s into a place that is unique (not only in Vienna): a creative microcosm of the local subculture. But the basement is threatened with closure after thirty years; the new owner does not want to renew the lease. Angela Christlieb’s documentary takes us through the self-built and improvised rooms of the subterranean laboratory in the 7th district, called Janka Industries, where Voodoo Jürgens and bands like Petra und der Wolf or Tankris rehearse and perform in the midst of a bizarre electronic scrap collection. A music film and ultimate underground homage that cinematically captures the magic of the place. A statement for the urgency and beauty of subculture.

How to run an Indie Label

UNDER THE UNDERGROUND

Concert:

miaw is a new collaborative pop project that indulges breakbeats, glitchy vocals and warm synths in a recognizable yet soft experimental song structure.

Panel with Piet Charlet (Time Tools Mastering)

During Trial & Error he gives us a deep insight into his mastering process and the tools he uses.

How to run an Indie Label
